When Elliot Page came out as trans and nonbinary in December 2020, Netflix immediately updated the credits of The Umbrella Academy (and the rest of Page’s projects) accordingly. At the time, there were no plans to make any changes to Page’s character—but things have changed since then. Yesterday, Page and Netflix shared a new photo (above). “Meet Viktor Hargreeves,” Page wrote (with, of course, an umbrella emoji).
The AV Club confirmed with Netflix that Page’s character “will come out as transgender in season 3 and be henceforth known as ‘Viktor Hargreeves.'”
The Umbrella Academy is about the seven Hargreeves siblings, each with a different notable talent, who were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves and shaped into superheroes. Well, six of them became superheroes, anyway. For two seasons, Page has played the troubled Number Seven (they all were given numbers before names), who Reginald claimed didn’t have powers. But those muffled powers exploded at the end of season one, leading to an apocalypse that doesn’t get averted so much as avoided, as the siblings leapt back in time for the second season.
Season three begins when the siblings return to the present day, hoping they’ve fixed the timeline—only to find a “Sparrow Academy” made up of seven other powerful siblings in their place. Netflix hasn’t said much more about the third season’s plot, or about how Viktor’s transition will fit into the story, just that they’re glad he’s here.
